New GT-2/TA-2 Mustang for Bobby Kennedy

New GT-2/TA-2 Mustang for Bobby Kennedy

Postby Bosco » Thu Dec 12, 2013 5:15 pm

Howe Racing in Beaverton, Michigan has been commissioned to build a new TA-2 type chassis for Daytona Beach, Florida racer Bobby Kennedy. The bare chassis will then be delivered to Bemco Fabrication in Deland, Florida for final assembly. This racer will get a Howe built Mustang look body and the Trans Am spec all aluminum Ford small block engine built by Byron Koury Racing Engines of Deland, Florida. Kennedy plans to contest a number of Trans Am Series races in 2014 as well as select V8 StockCar and SCCA National races.

Kennedy, the nineteen year old son of long time IMSA, SCCA, and Grand Am road racer Squeak Kennedy, started racing at age eight in the circle track Bandolero's, before moving to quarter midgets and then to the short track "Pro Trucks". As soon as he was of age, young Kennedy went to SCCA road racing school where he received his license after that one weekend. Kennedy already has two SCCA regional championships under his belt as well as a number of wins in the high horsepower Crane Cams V8 StockCar Series and a professional win at Watkins Glen in a Grand Am showroom stock series. With excellent coaching from dad, Squeak and his crew chief, former ASA and ARCA crew chief Woody Wood, Kennedy has quickly developed into a competitor to be reckoned with.

Kennedy plans to compete in several Trans Am events in 2014, looking forward to a possible full schedule in 2015.

Will look much like Jeff Burck's Bemco built Mustang, but in the Ford Grabber Blue color.

Chassis is back after being powder coated, body is off to the paint shop.

Byron Koury says the motor will be ready in a couple weeks. Woody should have this assembled by then and just install the mill. Hopefully we can get in a bit of testing before the TA opener at Sebring.

As many of you know Bobby had a trailer fire on the way home from the last TA-2 race at Homestead. I happen to be at Woody's shop Monday after
Sunday nights fire and took a few pics but the whole deal was so sad I didn't post them.

And big WTG for Steve who jumped in that trailer and put the fire out! The smell of that burnt trailer was something an you could smell it from
a block away.

Last update I have as of yesterday is the chassis is striped and ready for rebuild. I'm sure Bosco will keep us updated on the Mustang's rebuild.

This is what I wrote up on April 14 with regard to the Kennedy Racing transporter and race car fire.

The road racing community and especially the Trans Am family really stepped up to the plate to help Bobby get back on track. All in all they raised about 12000 dollars to help rebuild the car and trailer.

************************************************************************************************

Those that follow sports car racing in the south east likely have seen and appreciated the talent of young Daytona Beach racer Bobby Kennedy. Bobby, a second generation racer has followed in the footsteps of his dad, SCCA, Grand Am & IMSA racer Squeak Kennedy. Racing since the age of eight, Bobby has steadily moved up from Quarter Midgets to the short track FAST Trucks, to SCCA club racing and then to professional racing in Grand Am, IMSA and SCCA Trans Am. Bobby Kennedy has excelled along all the way winning many races, setting track records and several club racing championships. Bobby had a professional win in Grand Am Street Stocks in 2012 at age 18.

Last year, the Kennedy family invested heavily to build a Trans Am Series racer for the fast growing TA2 class. A new Mustang was constructed by Bemco Fabrication and the team debuted late in the year at the Daytona Trans Am Finale. Bobby surprised many, coming home in second place behind series champion Cameron Lawrence. At Sebring in March, Bobby finished in 9th place, moving up from his 26th place starting spot despite an engine that was not performing at full song.

This past weekend at the Trans Am event at Homestead, it looked as though Bobby was headed for a sure top five finish again until he lost the transmission about halfway through the race. While that was disappointing, it was on the trip back home that things became much worse.

Crew Chief Woody and wrench Steve Branton noticed smoke issuing from a vent in the trailer as they traveled the turnpike near Palm Beach Gardens. They quickly pulled over, with Steve grabbing a fire extinguisher and attacking the fire through the side door. Woody got the rear door open and removed the fuel drum as the fire flashed and rolled out over his head. Steve Branton's determined effort got the fire knocked down. The car was removed from the trailer and the fire area overhauled. It appears a short in the battery for the lift ignited the wall, with fire then extending to the car, contents and roof of the trailer.

The damage to the race car and trailer is extensive and devastating for this low budget team. The car will have to completely come apart with much new bodywork needed. The engine will need to go back to the engine builder to be checked as the dry chemical extinguishing agent went down the carb. The front shocks and suspension are damaged, the data system as well and a whole lot more. The trailer will need new interior, including some cabinets and reworked wiring. The damage is probably upwards of twenty thousand, but could have been much worse.

We would like to help get the Kennedy team back on the track and are setting up a fund raising effort to help in this regard. Those that have the means and the desire to help this talented young man continue to make noise in the road racing world can do so by going to:

Partners in this effort will be invited to be with the team when they return to action and sign the car signifying their support. Any and all help is much appreciated and thanks for your consideration.

TEAM BOBBY KENNEDY

Bobby's Mustang had to go through a complete rebuild after the devastating fire in April after the TA race at Homestead. The car was torn down to the bare chassis. More than half the body had to be replaced, the motor, rear end, and tranny rebuilt, suspension, data etc rebuilt or replaced. New windows and paint of course. It is nearing completion and should be ready soon. The trailer also suffered major damage and is being rebuilt as well. It should be ready in a week or two.

New pic soon

Bobby's Friday Sebring test went well with just a small electrical glitch. Should be good to go for Daytona.
