2006 V8 Stock Car Races 7 & 8 – VIR

Most people might want to spend time with Mom over Mother’s Day, but since Area 12 Director and longtime SCCA member Kaye Fairer has become “mom”, many of us choose to spend that weekend driving rapidly over the beautiful environs of VIRginia International Raceway.  The 2006 version of the Al Fairer Memorial SARRC/MARRS challenge attracted almost 400 entrants over the May 12-14 weekend, over twenty of which were V8 Stock Car competitors.

On Saturday Central Florida’s Jeff Emery qualified on the pole in the V8GT1 class and led every lap on the way to first overall.  Alabama’s Todd Carter demonstrated he’s getting the hang of wheeling his taxi-cab around road courses and finished third overall and first in V8SC in his Pontiac Grand Prix while Bryan Dobyns backed up his GTA win at the 2005 American Road Race of Champions with a dominating win in V8LM against formidable competition.  Willie Mullins took first in the steel-bodied V8GN class.

Although the winners’ names remained the same for Sunday’s race, the journey was MUCH different!  Although rain had briefly threatened Sunday morning, the skies had cleared and the weather was perfect most of the day.  As the V8 cars were gridding up, however, the clouds rolled back in and many of the corner workers were pointing toward the skies on the warm-up lap.  Sure enough, intermittent raindrops were hitting the windshields on the first race lap down the 175 mph back straight.  Next time around the rain had moved to the uphill esses and things were definitely getting damp on the road surface.  Since slicks don’t disperse water all that well, off-course excursions were in abundance.  By lap three the skies had really opened up and lightning was reported in the area, so the race officials decided to checker the race after five of the scheduled ten laps.  Many of those in impound felt it was more a survival test than a race, but all agreed cutting the race short was the correct thing to do.

Thanks also go out to all the drivers and teams for a job well done! As always, series officials would like to thank the sponsors (Goodyear, Sunoco, HRPWorld.com, Five Star Racecar Bodies, Racecar Engineering, Racing Electronics, DRP Performance, Mintex Racing, CV Products, Amsoil, Howe Racing Enterprises and Tex Racing) for their continued support of the series.
